Adam Lambert If I Had You Music Video Review
73If I Had You is the third single from Adam Lambert's album, For Your Entertainment
Video directed by Bryan Barber. Song written by Max Martin, Shellback, Savan Kotecha. Produced by Max Martin & Shellback.
‘If I Had You’ is a bohemian party in the woods. A salute to personal expression, Burning Man, love and acceptance. If you are tired of over-produced videos with hard edges and bad attitudes, then yoú'll enjoy this uplifting, dance song. Bryan Barber has a very impressive music video history and his sense of adventure is really apparent here.
The setting is in the forest at dusk and beyond, where it’s inhabited by a counter-culture of eclectic, artistic souls; the mood is all about having fun and partying together. The trees are seduced and surrounded by countless dancers; hordes of exotic partygoers who can’t resist the lure of the beat. They set the ambiance perfectly, and special lighting effects complete it. You won’t find gratuitous sex scenes in this video. You will see happily adorned, talented musicians, performers and personalities, some of whom you recognize, established and new, including Adam’s own dancers, Brooke Wendle, Terrance Spencer, Taylor Green and Sasha Mallory; doing what they do best, and having an incredible time.
Adam’s costuming on this video is a playful mix of styles. Billowing black harem pants; steampunk suit with top hat, make up and funky pants; White jeans paired with a crazy Skingraft spiked, grommet jacket, platforms and warrior spiked shin guards; and Phillipe & David Blond's fierce, gold talon-encrusted leather ensemble. Adam's fashion eccentricities are exciting, and add another visual dimension. He rocks in a long horsetail; and the tribal make up by Sutan Amrull completes the individualistic looks perfectly.
This song showcases Adam’s vocals in their purest form, including his higher register. He also features singing his own back-ups. Adam slips through his incredible range in smoothly-gradated transitions. This man’s technical ability sets him apart from his peers, and makes you wonder just where his highest and longest notes will take you. His band, Monte Pittman on guitar, Longineu Parsons on drums, Tommy Joe Ratliff on bass, and Camila Grey on keys, with their wealth of experience, nail the catchy, energetic vibe artisticly, effortlessly, and you don’t want the party to end. The lyrics can be interpreted to Adam's personal and professional lifestyles, and it's hard to resist singing along to the chorus.
The theme of this incredible song is that unless you have a connection and love in your life, then the material things that you have are worthless. It's something that everyone can relate to. The interpretation that Adam has put into this song, is that no matter what your sexuality, religion, color, or age, if we connect over how we’re the same, ‘Life would be a party, It’d be ecstasy.’ It’s a wonderfully addictive philosophy, and one that we constantly witness when he interacts with other people. Adam has said ‘I wanted to make a video that paid tribute to the wonderful people who’ve inspired me to become the artist and spirit that I am today.’ His uncanny ability to be a modern pied piper, collecting followers at such a fast pace, combined with his inner need to validate and honor those whom he respects and loves, attests to his amazing Karma beautifully.

You write beautifully. I love everything you said and agree wholeheartedly. Adam's message is about loving everyone. We are one big human community. Adam will move mountains...
I love this review because it expresses my feelings too. Adam has snagged me in his pied piper role through his talent, personality, and his beauty (yeah I am a bit shallow there...actually I would love him if he wasn't beautiful, but what a perk).
Well, that brought a tear to my eye. It is fabulous when someone actually understands that all the talent and charisma Adam possesses comes from a place deep inside that is also inhabited by goodness, gratitude, and a need to make the universe a better place. Anyone who he calls a friend is very lucky, and vice versa.
Love your take, Ann! Love everything Adam!!!
@Karen LOL my Mom says the same thing. Maybe you just hafta be raised on hott quick cuts and action flashes in that are in all the good vids and movies to like it. Or maybe I'm just ADD hehe. Anyway, I love it the vid, it makes me wanna dance dance dance!
awesome vocals, visuals, lyrics and message=awesome adam lambert--excellent review--thanks!!!!
I'm a huge Adam fan and I love the message of this video, the costumes, the wonderful lighting, but I really dislike the execution. Do video producers really think we will get bored if they give us 7 or 8 seconds to really look at the costumes, the facial expressions, the moves ... in the first minute of this video there were more than 40 scene changes, which means an average of 1.5 seconds of each scene, hardly enough time to focus before it shifts. Unfortunately, the WWFM video was the same. I'm enough of an Adam fan that I bought both of them to support him, but I won't be watching them. Sorry.
Adam rocks! I love the video.
Great descriptive writing as always. Party on!
You said it so well! This song always makes me wanna dance!!
